Tree fallen across the Zealandia fence
Here's how we're taking action
UPDATE: Friday, 2 May at 4pm
Our fence is now secure!
Thanks to some high-precision tree work from our friends at Arb Innovations and some handy work from our team, a major tree fall was removed today and the fence made secure once again!
Thanks to everyone who is helping us by donating to our fence campaign!
UPDATE: Friday, 2 May at 9am
Wellington's recent storm brought down trees across the city, and our sanctuary wasn’t spared.
Thanks to routine post-storm checks (and a few calls from the public, thank you!), we’ve identified trees that have fallen across our introduced-predator-exclusion fence, causing some damage to it and posing a bridging risk (they could create a path for introduced predators to get in). These are both possible causes of a fence breach we have response protocols in place for.
These include:
• inspecting the fence
• repairing the fence
• removing vegetation
• deploying an incursion response, including baiting and monitoring traps and setting up motion-sensing cameras
Here's a message from our CEO, Dr Danielle Shanahan:
Our Infrastructure and Conversation Teams and arborists are on site, working as we write this.
Keeping the sanctuary safe for our wildlife is always our top priority. We’ll keep you posted and aim to reopen as soon as it's safe to do so. Thank you for your patience.
If you are able, donating is the best way to support critical responses like this.
