Sustainability at Rātā Café

Next time you pop up to Rātā for a coffee or a snack, you can eat easy knowing that as well as your money going back into our conservation mahi/work, the team at Rātā Café have also been working on initiatives to reduce food waste.

We’ve been working with Jina’s to use ‘Tag 2’ and ‘Tag 3’ products – this simply means fruit and vegetables that are too ugly or wonky to sell in shops. These products have been used in our soups and jams. We are also stocking Citizen Soda, who use wonky cherries in their sodas.

Look out for the ‘rescued’ label on the baking in the cabinet too – this means we have used fruit rescued from Wellingtonians' backyards by Community Fruit Wellington. If you have a fruit tree with fruit to spare, then the wonderful volunteers at Community Fruit will come to your door, pick the fruit and redistribute it back into the community (or make delicious jams out of it!).
