A generation of restoration
We are only one generation into our 500-year journey of restoration, but together we have transformed Wellington as a city. The fence that surrounds Zealandia has provided sanctuary for precious native species and now they are reaching into the suburbs and beyond. The latest bird monitoring results from Wellington City Council are in and show native manu/birds are outnumbering introduced birds across the city in parks and reserves!
Since 2011, there have been substantial increases in the average annual counts of kererū (243% increase), kākā (170% increase), tūī (93% increase), and pīwakawaka (37% increase).
Thanks to the fence and the amazing community surrounding Zealandia, we are now seeing species once extinct from the area become regular visitors to Wellingtonians' backyards.
