Impressions of Nature by Julie Moonlight

We are thrilled to present our upcoming exhibition at Te Māra a Toi – impressions of nature by the talented Julie Moonlight.

On display from 1 April, the exhibition showcases Julie’s original linocut prints featuring New Zealand flora and fauna, as well as images that are influenced by the landscape and manu/birds of Zealandia. Julie creates multi-layered original prints by cutting away and printing from lino.

About the artist:

Julie Moonlight has had a lifelong passion for art and nature, and first studied printmaking over 20 years ago in the UK, finding herself hooked on the process ever since.

For Julie, it is not just the challenge of creating everything in reverse but also that there is something unique in the mark-making and transfer of ink to paper that is very different from anything that can be achieved in pencil or paint. Julie works mostly in linocut, where the image is cut and printed from a piece of lino, but she also enjoys learning and experimenting with other print processes.

Julie has been a volunteer at Zealandia for over ten years and currently assists with Zealandia By Night tours. Close observation of the flora, fauna and landscape of Zealandia informs many of Julie’s limited-edition original prints. Julie especially likes to include things that might generally go unnoticed, such as the leaves and berries on the ground and the intertwined kareao (supplejack). The textures and patterns, not just on the objects themselves but in the negative spaces, all add to the visual interest and help Julie to communicate a sense of place.

Originally from the UK, Julie made Aotearoa New Zealand home in 2010 and now lives in Wellington. Julie’s work has been exhibited at the New Zealand Art Show, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts (NZAFA) and various group exhibitions both in New Zealand and overseas. She is a member of the Print Council Aotearoa New Zealand (PCANZ) and is included in its publication ‘PROOF’, which celebrates two decades of printmaking in New Zealand. Her print ‘Night Flight’ was exhibited at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History as part of an exhibition to launch ‘PROOF’ in early 2023. ‘Nocturnal’ received a Merit Award in the NZAFA recent ‘Fantastic Beasts’ exhibition featuring art works with fins, fangs, feathers and fur. Her work can be found in private collections both in Aotearoa and overseas.
