The Karori Sanctuary Experience

Did you know, 92% of New Zealand’s native freshwater fish species are also endemic – found nowhere else in the world?

Our sanctuary valley’s freshwater ecosystem recently underwent an eradication of brown trout (trout are non-native) from the upper catchment, leading to a dramatic comeback of native kōkopu and koura.

Eels can also be spotted at Zealandia. The best place to seem them is along Te Mahanga track – come along for a species talk. There’s also a small aquarium at the wetlands.
